Taos, site of a centuries-old Pueblo village and Popé's command center for the 1680 Pueblo Revolt. In the early nineteenth century, Taos became the unofficial headquarters for mountain men and southwest traders, many of whom, like Kit Carson, settled there when the wilderness days of the West came to an end.
