Valverde, where Union
forces attempted unsuccessfully to stop a Confederate advance up the
Rio Grande from Texas in 1862.
The Confederates went on to capture Albuquerque
and Santa Fe, but
were stopped on their way to the gold fields of Colorado at Glorietta
Pass.
