Texas
San Antonio was established
in 1718 as part of Spanish
precautions against French incursions into Tejas from neighboring
Louisiana. It was administrative center of Mexican Tejas when Stephen
Austin established his American colony nearby in 1823,
and the site of the most famous battle in the Texas War for Independence,
the defense of the Alamo in 1836.
San Antonio became a major cattle center in the 1870's as the starting-point
for the drive north up the Chisholm
Trail.
