The Whitman Mission
at Waiilatpu on the Walla Walla River was established by Marcus
and Narcissa Whitman in 1836
to bring Christianity to the Cayuse Indians. When a deadly measles
epidemic struck the Cayuse in 1847,
they blamed the Whitmans and attacked, murdering Marcus and Narcissa,
along with twelve others.
