Established in 1834
as a fur trading outpost, in the 1840's
Ft. Laramie became an important way station along the North
Platte River for emigrants heading west on the Oregon Trail. In
1851 and again in 1868 it
was the site of important treaty negotiations between the federal
government and the Plains tribes, which unfortunately led to further
war.
