A Science Odyssey 'That's My Theory'

I am UNIVAC! The first electronic digital computer for commercial use in America. I was first delivered to the United States Census Bureau in 1950. My name stands for UNIVersal Automatic Computer.

My claim to fame, some might say, resulted from a TV appearance I made in 1952. It was during that year's presidential elections. My job was to predict the outcome of the election.

At 9PM, with only seven percent of the votes in, I predicted Eisenhower would win by a landslide. Well, human forecasters had predicted a close race. Since my prediction was so far off (at least in the humans' minds) they thought that I had made a huge error and decided not to announce my prediction over the air.

When the votes were finally tallied, the humans realized that my prediction wasn't that far off. In fact, my prediction of 438 electoral votes for Eisenhower and 93 for Stevenson was very close to the final 442/89 tally.

The news about my prediction spread across the world, and I became a star.
