New Material: Cast Iron

You really shouldn't build this bridge with cast iron. Cast iron is strong in compression, but it is a brittle material. Cast iron contains large amounts of carbon, so it breaks easily and without warning. Engineers used cast iron to build arch bridges 100 years ago, but today we have stronger materials that are less brittle.
