Concrete Dome with Holes
Carving holes is a great way to lighten a dome -- but the governor won't be happy with your design.

Concrete + Holes = Caution

Around 500 A.D., ancient engineers realized that a dome could be made of a circular ring of arches, rather than a thick, solid shell. This meant they could open up the spaces between the arches, creating windows, which made domes much, much lighter. The dome of the Mihrimah Mosque in Turkey is almost entirely pierced with windows.

This design would make the Capitol building very bright and airy, but the governor is not interested in a dome with windows. He wants a solid dome. Try again!
