The Building Big Basics pages introduce the basic characteristics of each type of structure. Students can click on highlighted links to view diagrams showing the forces affecting each structure, and how the structure transmits those forces to the ground. Examples from the Wonders of the World Databank are referenced throughout.
Divide your group into five teams and assign each team a structure (bridges, domes, skyscrapers, dams, or tunnels). Each team should use the information on the Basics page for their structure to develop a five-minute presentation about the structure. The presentations should include information about the shape of the structure and the forces that affect it. Then have each team present their structure to the rest of the group. Suggest that teams consider creative ways to convey the information, such as using their bodies to imitate the structure or creating an advertisement for their structure. They should also choose at least one example of their structure from the Wonders of the World Databank to show and discuss.
