__ Doing Hands-On Science With Kids: Before the Activity
Before | Introducing the Activity | During | After | Classroom Management 101

Try every activity yourself before doing it with kids! Then you will know what to expect when the kids try it. You can modify materials or instructions based on your particular situation, or anticipate where your group will need help.

Collect all materials, including supplies for any extensions. Have extras on hand so kids can "redo" activities.

Divide materials into the correct amounts for each group. To streamline the activity time, place each group's materials together in a separate box.

If your school or program cannot afford activity materials, seek a sponsor in your community. Kids can ask for donations or a discount from local businesses or community groups. (Be sure to check your organization's rules regarding advertising and sponsorship.)

Build anticipation by displaying an unfamiliar term or interesting picture related to the topic for several days before doing the activity. Let kids wonder and speculate about the topic.

Invite older kids, parents, or other adults to volunteer as activity leaders. Meet with any volunteers ahead of time.
