Stone
Stone isn't the best material for a really tall building because it's too heavy.

It's certainly strong in compression, it's cheap, and it won't burn in a fire, but it is heavy -- really heavy. A 50-story skyscraper made of stone would sink right into the earth! You can bet the mayor won't like that! Luckily, there are materials as strong as stone, but much, much lighter.
