How do you hear the sound of a sonic boom? Your outer ear collects sound waves that are moving through a medium—in this case, through air. Sound waves enter the ear and strike the ear drum, making it vibrate. These vibrations cause microscopic hairs to move, creating electrical signals that are sent to the brain. Your brain interprets these signals as sounds.
