NOVA Online: Hot Science/Chemical Residue
Chroma

Color Separation

The water and alcohol mixture in the glass soaks up through the paper strips, and carries the different colors in the food coloring along at different rates. Over a matter of minutes, the different colors separate out on the paper, because certain colors travel farther and faster than others.

Using similar chromatography techniques, a chemical analysis expert can separate out the various components that made up an explosive.
