In 1992, on a paleontological dig in the Gobi Desert, a team of American scientists unearthed a fossil that added an interesting perspective to the evolutionary relationship between birds and dinosaurs. To interpret this fossil's significance, the scientists used a systematic process called cladistics.
Cladistics is the study of the differences and similarities of different organisms over time. The more characteristics shared between two organisms, the more closely related they are assumed to be. The paleontologists on the Gobi expedition found many similarities between their dinosaur fossil and the anatomy of present-day birds. Their findings led them to change their theories about the evolutionary chain of dinosaurs.
