Michael Kirk and Mike Wiser — the writing team behind FRONTLINE’s acclaimed documentaries United States of Secrets: The Program (Part One) and League of Denial — won big at last night’s 2015 Writers Guild Awards.
United States of Secrets: The Program (Part One), an investigation of how the government came to spy on millions of Americans in the wake of 9/11, was named the winner in the Documentary Script — Current Events category. And League of Denial, which explores the NFL’s concussion crisis, won the Documentary Script — Other Than Current Events category.
“It’s an honor to write and produce films like United States of Secrets and League of Denial,” says Kirk, who also directed both documentaries. “Both programs are about crucial decisions made in secret by two major American institutions—the National Security Agency and the National Football League.”
“Those decisions have had real and lasting impacts on millions of Americans,” adds Wiser. “The films simply would not have been made without the support of FRONTLINE and PBS.”
