What's in it for the Public?
The original agreement was seen by many in the public health
community as far too lenient on the industry. What's in it for the
Public Health and the General Public:
- a massive public health campaign to stop smoking by young people
- better and more specific warning labels on cigarettes
- antismoking education programs
- a $25 billion dollar trust for tobacco related medical research
- Industry funded smoking cessation programs for adults
- A ban on all outdoor advertising and the use of cartoon characters
- US FDA regulation of nicotine as a drug
- disclosure of all industry research about smoking and health
- New Federal restrictions on secondhand smoke in public places
- Individual suits can still go forward in the future
