Kim Lawton: Partners Fighting AIDS

December 1, 2008 marked the 20th anniversary of World AIDS Day. Pastor and bestselling author Rick Warren hosted a special gathering honoring President George W. Bush’s work to fight HIV/AIDS. Religion and Ethics NewsWeekly Managing Editor Kim Lawton covered the event and says President-elect Barack Obama has also pledged to work with faith-based groups on HIV/AIDS.

I would reind you , as one who remembers well the beginnings of the AIDS epidemic , that the religious right , at the time ; successfully fought the use of any public funding for research into HIV and the development of treatment options. The subsequent delay in acquiring anti-viral medications denied thousands even a fighting chance at survival or additional life.I know. I buried fifty-seven of them. Evangelicals did not take any interset in the subject other than voicing approval of these tragic losses ; until heterosexual Africa was decimated.
