Excellent discussion and fascinating that even the Vatican exhibits tension between the single issue abortion wing and all encompassing prolife wing. An investigation/discussion you might want to explore would be how this divisive issue has permeated the parish level. I am Catholic and attend Mass regularly, including weekday Masses. There are individuals I cannot even speak to on a political level because they are single issue zealots. I also observe this in the Clergy. Some of the Priests would have you think that you must only vote based on one issue and for the "right person" and you can tell now that the election is over, they are licking their wounds and disgruntled. As a more liberal Democrat in a more conservative Church, I often want to walk-out during the Homilies, and certainly feel alienated by the wolves in the flock. I think this would make an interesting topic.

Keep up the wonderful insightful intelligent work everybody! I think you are all fine!

God Bless!

This is not a comment on content (very good), but on form. May I?
Why must people use the words "you know" so often in their, even learned, discourse? Kim Lawton uses the "you know" crutch every few words in this piece. Maybe someone could tell her how annoying that habit is for a listener or a reader.
She need not emulate Caroline Kennedy who can't seem to string a sentence together without the help of "you know"....You know what I mean...

When the discussion came around to Proposition 8 in California, I found it interesting and disturbing that John Allen, the Catholic "expert", was strangly silent. He artfully dodged making any comment. This whole issue of homosexuality in the catholic church is the "elephant in the living room". It is well known that dispite the fact that the Catholic Church officially decries any prejudice against homosexuals, the hierarchy in California spent millions in support of this proposition. I am disappointed that Mr. Allen chose not to make any attempt, however feeble in nature, to try to explain why!
