Celebrated musician Dave Brubeck died Wednesday (December 5). He was 91 years old, a day short of 92. In 2009, Brubeck spoke about his religious influences with Bob Faw for Religion & Ethics NewsWeekly. Known primarily as a jazz musician, Brubeck also composed several pieces of music that dealt with religious themes, including a Catholic mass he wrote in 1979.
DAVE BRUBECK: “When I write a piece, a sacred piece, I’m looking hard and trying to discover what I’m about, and what my parents were about and the world is about.”
FAW: “You think religious music can change people?”
BRUBECK:” Yeah, sure!”
