My kindergarten class and I just finished learning about quilts. We approach the unit from several different perspectives. As the children bring in quilts for us to "interview" we learn about shapes, symmetry, patterns and the use of color. We use Faith Ringgold books along with a wealth of other pieces to help us learn how quilts have stories to tell. Some of those stories support our learning as we delve into the world of the Underground Railroad, slavery and African-American heroes. We make several paper quilts and culminate our unit by making a cloth quilt for our local family crisis center. It is always an amazing time. The children are stunned that people would be treated so badly because they looked different. They are so proud of being able to sew and create something of value for someone in need. |
