Over the course of four nights, "Avoiding Armageddon" takes viewers around the world to examine how the world has come to the brink of Armageddon and what is being done to back away from these urgent threats.

Renowned journalist Walter Cronkite hosts this inaugural production from Ted Turner Documentaries and each night concludes with a discussion on the provocative issues raised, moderated by veteran newsman Frank Sesno.

The first night's episode, "Silent Killers: Poisons and Plagues," looks at biological and chemical weapons. Viewers are not only given historical context about these horrific weapons, but also are brought face-to-face with victims who lived through biological or chemical weapons attacks.

The second night's episode, "Nuclear Nightmares: Losing Control," tells of past and present nuclear dangers. The show explores the myth that the end of the Cold War decreased the threat of a nuclear holocaust. In fact, with unsecured nuclear weapons stockpiles, increased nuclear proliferation and growing international terrorism, the threat of a nuclear Armageddon has increased exponentially.

It takes an in-depth look at homeland security as well as some of the proactive programs around the world that address changing the environments that breed terrorism and instability.
