"Let me begin at the beginning," wrote Cortés to the King of Spain. "We sailed our ships to a land called Yucatan."
Like Columbus before him, Cortés did not know what lay ahead. He thought that the land he could see beyond Cuba was just islands through which they could sail through to China. Upon arriving,
the Spaniards were awestruck, "What rational beings live here," wrote Cortés. "This is the best and richest land that ever there was."
