Montezuma, Moctezuma as he was known to his people, is about 50 years
old, although he looks 10 years younger. He is "of good height, well
proportioned, spare and slim," his hair cut just over his ears. He has
a short, thin, black beard, and his face, although rather long, is
cheerful. He has fine deep eyes, and (so said one who knew him) "in
his demeanor could express geniality or, if needed, a serious
composure." He may laugh heartily, giggling with delight when off
duty, and when entertained by his jesters and dwarves but in his public duties he is always
contained. "Astute, learned, discerning and capable" was a Spanish
judgement on him.
