The Conquest of the Incas
Machu PicchuCharles V

Charles V became Holy Roman Emperor in 1520 and Pizarro entered the New World as his representative. His rule is considered the height of the Holy Roman Empire. As Pizarro explained it to Atahuallpa, the Pope — God's representative on earth — has decreed that Charles V has a right to this land, therefore you must subjugate yourself to his rule. He continued, "When you have seen the errors in which you live, you will understand the good that we have done you by coming to your land by order of his Majesty the King of Spain. Our Lord permitted that your pride should be brought low and that no Indian should offend a Christian."
