When Pizarro's men reached Pachacamac, they expected it to be outfitted like a great temple with gold statues and other finery. They were amazed to find Pachacamac virtually empty with the exception of a large wooden statue. The Spaniards wondered how they could worship such a worthless piece of wood and left it behind as they plundered the Inca countryside. The statue is still standing at Pachacamac. |

statue was the only relic in the great temple at Pachacamac.
Michael Wood tells the story of the Spaniards' disappointment.
