adjustment in a great imperfect world,” Haglund told me in 1996. “I
want to do something important. Just one thing that is really significant
before I die.” The American forensic anthropologist went on to testify
in the trial of the Bosnian Serb general Radislav Kristic. Kristic had
led the assault on Srebrenica and was charged with crimes against humanity
and aiding and abetting genocide. In 2001, the International Criminal
Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia sentenced Kristic to 46 years for
his role in the Srebrenica massacre.
