An Electrifying Idea
In the summer of 1878, Thomas Edison was watching a gang of miners drilling for ore with heavy tools when he was seized by a vision the idea of energy moving as electricity over a long distance. Electricity was in its infancy; people used it sparingly without understanding it much. But now Edison envisioned great webs of electrical current created in central stations and routed through networks to homes, stores, factories, offices and public spaces.
