Papua
New Guinea - Wildlife
PNG possesses a rich variety of reptiles, marsupials, native freshwater
fish and birds but is almost devoid of large mammals. For more than
two million years the island has been isolated, and its animals evolved
in isolation. There are no wild species that can be domesticated. The
inhabitants of Papua New Guinea eventually benefited from the introduction
of the pig, dog and chicken from their nearest neighbour, Indonesia.
Protein deficiency, particularly amongst the highland population,
was a serious problem.
