These classroom resources are designed to explore the influential theories of the artist and teacher Hans Hofmann, as well as to give students insight into the artistic process itself. The two lesson plans presented here are intended to be used in conjunction with this web site, other material on the Internet, and the HANS HOFMANN: Artist/Teacher, Teacher/Artist video.
Lesson Plan One: Color in 3-D: A Nature Design Project by Peggy Reeves :: Grades 6-12
Using a hands-on approach, students will learn the basics behind Hofmann’s “Push and Pull” theory of color. They will then create their own two-dimensional design that incorporates both Push and Pull and the Cubists’ fracture of the picture plane.
Lesson Plan Two: Introduction to Modern Art: Practice and Principals by Karen Rosner :: Grades 10-12
This resource can be used as one comprehensive curriculum or broken into three individual lessons: An Introduction to Abstract Expressionism; Compare and Contrast Other Artists with Hans Hofmann; and The Artist and the Political Climate of the Times.
