INT.
MERRIMACK COUNTY SUPERIOR COURT. John Stephen is sitting at the prosecution
table. Except for him, the courtroom is empty.
JOHN
My name is John Stephen.
I'm the assistant attorney-general for the state of New Hampshire.
You're about to hear a true story. It's about a case that I
prosecuted here in this courtroom. And you're going to hear
it from the man who is still living it. You see, this story
is not over.

TOM
You know, most lessons
you learn in your life, you have to learn them for yourself, right?
Most lessons in life, you going to have to learn for yourself. It's
about choices, right? I mean, your folks and your teachers
or your friends, they can guide you and help you and maybe help you
miss the big bumps in the road, but ultimately, most lessons you
have to learn for yourself. But see, there's some lessons -
there's some lessons where the cost is too great, the tragedy too
devastating. You can't afford to learn them yourself. In fact,
you're lucky if you live through it.
Thanks for your time,
I appreciate it and best of luck to all of you. (Applause)
