The People:
Antonia works as on the 999 desk in Nottingham and owns her own house. She
has a Btec Diploma in Catering and Hotel Management, and is an accomplished cook.
She loves her modern lifestyle and recognises that she's done well for herself,
but says, "If I'd been born 100 years ago a woman of my class would almost certainly have been in service. And I'd like to know what that meant."
"I imagine that I would have considered myself very lucky to be employed in
a grand house like this. I'm twenty-nine now and that's quite old not to be married
- or it certainly was then - so I'd be hoping for promotion to a cook, or
something like that."
Antonia's job as kitchen maid means that she really only has one place of work - the Kitchen. She is only allowed upstairs once a day, to attend Morning Prayers. Otherwise she spends all her time between her bedroom in the attic and the Kitchen.
In terms of the hierarchy, the rules state "As kitchen maid, you are directly beneath
the chef de cuisine in order of seniority within the Kitchen. You are responsible for preparing meals for all the
servants and the School Room, and should assist the chef in preparing the Family's meals
as required. You will be assisted by the
scullery maid, and must see that she keeps the dishes washed and the Kitchen clean at all times.
"You will also be answerable to the housekeeper
and butler, and can expect to take orders from them."
