Millions of tenants at risk as federal eviction ban ends

Summary

The federal ban on evictions officially expired August 1. A last-minute effort by House Dems to extend the moratorium failed just before the deadline, and the Supreme Court ruled that the moratorium could not be extended without new legislation from Congress. A Census survey found that as of July 5, roughly 3.6 million people were at risk of eviction.

Five Facts

  • Who , according to Benfer, will be the first to be evicted once the moratorium is lifted?
  • What was the goal of the eviction moratorium?
  • When was another time Congress passed an eviction moratorium?
  • Where is the impact of the moratorium lift going to be the most devastating, according to this piece?
  • Why isn’t the funding allocated for landlords being distributed effectively?
  • How do evictions correlate to the spread of COVID-19?

Focus Questions

The moratorium lift will disproportionately impact people of color, particularly mothers and children. In light of efforts to reconcile race relations and encourage diversity and equity throughout America, what are some policy ideas you might have to address this issue? Media literacy: Who else do you think should be interviewed on this topic?
