For More

What students can do : 1. Take a look at the excerpt below from this article by young inventors in West Virginia who invented a device to transform waste cardboard into a building products a few years ago. The Greenbriar East High School InvenTeam from West Virginia was awarded a grant to build their invention over the course of the school year by Lemelson-MIT .
As the one year anniversary of the June 23rd [2016] West Virginia flood creeps closer we are reminded of the reason our invention idea was chosen in the first place. This flood devastated our community and we watched as lives and livelihoods were washed away. However, throughout our project our community has stood behind us and provided us with support when it was needed. The people of Greenbrier County are warm and considerate people that have always stood beside us to be proud and behind us to catch the team if it falls. The community stood behind us even after their time of need and for this we are grateful. The team has decided that Greenbricks™ will be the official name of our building blocks, honoring our home and school.
Discuss : The June 23rd flood severely impacted Greenbrier County where the Greenbrier InvenTeam is from. Why do you think the Greenbrier InvenTeam connected the June 23rd flood to their invention which makes building materials out of cardboard waste? Can you think of a problem in your community that needs an inventive solution? If you're not sure, find the nearest newspaper where you live here and start scrolling! 2. Watch this story to learn why Texas declared a state of emergency in late August amid severe flooding.
