Summary: Middle and high school students across the U.S. recently shared what issues they would like to see the news media cover in 2019. Check out what they had to say! Students featured in the piece come from the PBS NewsHour Student Reporting Labs (SRL), a program that teaches middle and high school students about journalism and media literacy. To learn more, see the SRL website here .
Discussion questions:
1) Essential question : Why is it important for media outlets to include a diverse array of voices (age, race, gender, income, disabilities, etc.) in news stories?
2) What types of stories would you like to see covered in the news more?
3) Media literacy questions : Do student-produced videos provide a different type of news story than videos produced by adults? Explain your response. What steps do you think SRL reporters had to complete in order to produce this story for a national news organization?
4) You may have heard the term "Student Voice" in school or over social media. What does "Student Voice" mean to you? If you think you have a good idea for an opinion piece, consider sending a pitch to NewsHour Extra's Student Voice blog . The blog is full of powerful, original pieces by students.
