In an ongoing series about the presidential candidates, Judy Woodruff reports on how Republican candidate and Arizona Senator John McCain has handled adversity and problems during his military and political career.
The report touches on several difficult times in McCain's public life: his time as a prisoner of war in Vietnam, his involvement in the Keating 5 corruption scandal, a nasty primary battle against George Bush in 2000, and his ongoing presidential campaign, which was almost derailed a year ago.
Woodruff also talks to McCain's senate colleagues about how he manages his office and makes important decisions in his senate office. Senators Lyndsey Graham, Lincoln Chafee and Jon Kyl discuss McCain's record on important issues as well as changes in his positions over his 26-year career in the Senate.
Quotes
"John deals with adversity in a way a little different than most people, and perhaps it's because he's been through so much. He shrugs it off."- Sen. Jon Kyl, R- Arizona
"It was a tough time, but, you know, he soldiered on. Every day, he showed up in the office every day. He didn't disappear. Every day, he was there. Every day, he fought. Every day, he still did his business."- Mark Buse, Chief of Staff, McCain Senate Office
"I always thought that this was not a man who could run things very well. His office was filled with people who were deeply loyal to him, but there was a kind of chaos, which was great in the Senate office, but that you wondered about otherwise." Norman Ornstein, American Enterprise Institute
