Image

As part of the last By the People project, citizens in eleven communities around the country gathered to discuss citizens rights and government responsibilities as they relate to healthcare, education, immigration, transportation, housing, and the environment. Around 100 participants in each city joined in dialogues hosted by local public television stations and community groups. The events were the focus of local programming, as well as part of a national By the People broadcast that aried on PBS on Jan. 4, 2008.

In October and November 2007, 300 adult Americans engaged in a national scientific experiment to see what the public would think about citizenship and democracy in modern American society if people became more informed about the issues and talked about them together. The experiment was conducted by Stanford University's Center for Deliberative Democracy, along with public opinion research firm Polimetrix.
