A little after 2:15 a.m., television networks project Bush the winner in Florida and the next occupant of the White House. The media says he is up by 50,000 votes in Florida. At around 2:30 a.m., Gore calls Bush to congratulate him. Gore sets off to give his concession speech at Nashville's War Memorial Plaza, but on the way Gore's staff gets word that Bush's Florida lead is down to 6,000. When Gore reaches the War Memorial, Bush's lead is under 1,000.
