Natural history: Red irish lords come in all sizes and colors. They can change color to match their surroundings. Hiding among soft corals and anemones, red irish lords are vibrant pink and red. Nestled in among rocks and debris they are drab and brown. A classic ambush predator, red irish lords are virtually invisible on the reef. They rest on the bottom, waiting for prey to wander close by. Red irish lords feed on crabs and shrimps. Like the sarcastic fringehead, male red irish lords watch over the eggs laid by the female in winter.

Range: From the Sea of Okhotsk south to Monterey, California.
