Los Alamos, New Mexico, USA
Los Alamos is a rugged, hard-to-access plateau near Santa Fe, New Mexico. In 1943, nuclear physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, who had been to summer camp in the area as a child and was impressed with its remoteness, suggested it as the site to set up a massive top-secret laboratory for the so-called Manhattan Project (to design and build the first atomic bomb). The Los Alamos National Laboratory remains one of the leading research facilities in the country today.
