Wolfgang K. Vogelbein is a professor of marine science at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science, the College of William and Mary. He has a Ph.D. in Veterinary Medical Sciences from the School of Veterinary Medicine of Louisiana State University. He is in charge of the Histopathology and Electron Microscopy Laboratories and heads the Pathobiology Program and Disease Diagnostic Laboratory at VIMS.
His research program focuses on issues of aquatic animal health in the Chesapeake Bay. Current funded research projects include studies on an emerging chronic bacterial disease called mycobacteriosis, currently infecting over 50 percent of the striped bass in Chesapeake Bay. Efforts are underway to determine if this disease is negatively impacting the striped bass population.
Other funded research projects include the Pfiesteria issue, a purportedly toxic dinoflagellate responsible for causing massive fish lesion and kill events and impacting human health in eastern U.S. estuaries. A third research effort in his laboratory is the association between exposure to chemical contaminants in the environment and the development of cancer in fishes. He has investigated the development of liver, pancreatic and vascular cancers in a small, non-migratory fish called the mummichog inhabiting creosote-contaminated sites in the Elizabeth River in Virginia.
