Step Nine is about making the match between your personal pie chart (yourself) and a collegeís pie chart (a particular school). Essay writing on college applications is the most important, but not the only part of the presentation process. You are hoping to make a match, and make that match apparent, between your strengths and interests and a collegeís environment and academic offerings.
You will want to do this in an honest, personal, knowledgeable, and enthusiastic manner. Students can spend time on the essays and other aspects of presentation, knowing they still have control over this part of the admissions process, and that they can determine what they want the colleges to know about them.
In this step, we introduce students to other aspects of presentation, such as recommendation letters and portfolios. We cover some of the challenges facing parents and students in the presentation process, and the stress that can ensue. Brainstorming, going back to your strengths assessment you worked on in Step Two, and honest discussion can help conquer writerís block and raise possible topics for essays. Presentation is an ongoing process that students can pursue through their senior year, to help develop a personal relationship with a college in order to discover and then establish a credible, logical fit between student and college.
