The September 2004 massacre of more than 300 children and adults by Chechen terrorists was labeled by many as Russia’s own 9/11. President Vladimir Putin responded by taking tough new measures that many critics say are undemocratic. But inside Russia, his popularity remains high. Is Putin the strong medicine Russia needs to become a successful democracy? Or is he taking it down the path to dictatorship? The New Russia (aired 8/29/2002) For many decades the United States and the Soviet Union were two nuclear-tipped Cold War adversaries. When the Cold War ended, the Soviet Union broke apart. Economic chaos reigned in Russia. Mikhail Gorbachev was replaced by Boris Yeltsin, who was succeeded by Vladimir Putin. The tragedy of 9/11 shook up the global chessboard. And today, there is a very new situation in Russia, partly hopeful, partly grim, and a very new relationship between America and Russia. Whither Russia? (aired 6/16/2001) When President Bush faces off with Russian President Vladimir Putin this week in Slovenia it marks the first meeting between the head of the world’s sole superpower and the leader of a once mighty nation, now in trouble. The transition from the Soviet system to one based on democracy and market capitalism was once viewed with great optimism, both inside and outside Russia. But the reality has been sobering. Many observers now find Russia’s economic reforms ineffective and its democratic reforms threatened. A recent issue of The Atlantic Monthly put it bluntly: "Russia Is Finished." Is Russia finished? What does "finished" mean, anyway? And what might it all mean for America? Is Russia A Threat Again? (aired 3/3/1995) Russia is in turmoil: war in Chechnya, a stagnant economy, a faltering democracy. But does trouble in Russia mean trouble for America?
