My favorite rodeo cowboy is Bill Pickett. Of African American and Cherokee descent, he became one of the all time greats after he invented “bulldogging.” That’s when a cowboy jumps off his horse mid-gallop and tackles a steer to the ground. Talk about taking a bull by the horns!

Did you know that cowboy Western music is actually from all over the world?
Cowboys pulled from British, Mexican, and Native American folk songs. They sang to the three rhythms of their horses: walking, trotting, or loping.

Not all cowboys were actually boys! Lots of women worked the ranges, ranches, and rodeos too.
