Michael Kelly, editor-at-large of the Atlantic Monthly and a columnist for the Washington Post, is killed in a Humvee accident, becoming the first American journalist to die during the Iraq war. Three days later, NBC News correspondent David Bloom dies of a pulmonary embolism, apparently caused by sitting for hours in a cramped personnel carrier. Both reporters were embedded with the U.S. Army's 3rd Infantry Division. On May 9, Boston Globe correspondent Elizabeth Neuffer is killed in an automobile accident near the Iraqi town of Samarra while on assignment there covering the aftermath of the war.
