July 17, 1936:General Francisco Franco leads a revolt against the leftist Popular Front government. For the next three years the Republican fight against Fascism will draw dozens of American writers and journalists, including John Dos Passos, Lillian Hellman, Langston Hughes, Robert Capa, Ernest Hemingway and Martha Gellhorn. On March 28, 1939, Madrid falls to Franco's forces. Four days later the Republican Army surrenders.
