August, 1914: As the German Army advances through Brussels, Richard Harding Davis is captured and threatened with execution as a British spy. After convincing the Germans that he is an American reporter, Davis is released and expelled from German occupied territory. Davis remains in Europe, but is unhappy with restrictions placed on the press by the Allied authorities. After briefly returning to the U.S., he dies in Paris of a heart attack on April 11, 1916.
