Trench warfare begins along the Western Front. In this relatively new form of warfare both sides suffer massive casualties for tiny gains in territory, but the horrors of trench warfare are not reported in the press due to heavy censorship. The American public would not read of the carnage until years later, when novels such as Ernest Hemingway's A Farewell to Arms and Erich Maria Remarque's All Quiet on the Western Front are published.
