November 4, 1965:
War correspondent and photographer Georgette "Dickey" Chapelle is killed by a booby trap near DaNang while on patrol with U.S. Marines — the first American female journalist to be killed in the line of duty. She had covered World War II for Look magazine and the Fawcett Publications magazine group, and was the recipient of the Overseas Press Club's George Polk Award and the U.S. Marine Corps Combat Correspondents Association's Distinguished Service Award.
