There are sketchy news reports of a Japanese attack on the U.S. military base at Pearl Harbor. That night at a White House dinner, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt tells Edward R. Murrow that American losses had been far heavier than reported. After much soul-searching, Murrow decides that publishing the story would be unpatriotic. On December 8, the U.S. declares war against Japan. Three days later, Germany declares war against the U.S.
