Captain Henry T. Waskow, a company commander in the U.S. Army 36th Division, is killed in the mountains of Italy. In a column for Scripps-Howard, Ernie Pyle describes how a mule had carried Waskow's body to the base of the mountain, and how the soldiers who had served with Waskow said their goodbyes. Pyle's column wins the 1944 Pulitzer Prize for Correspondence.
